Introduction
In this session, we focus on Ezra 8:1-14, the second group of exiles who returned approximately 75 years after the first group, led by Ezra under King Artaxerxes. King Artaxerxes was the son of Xerxes, who married Queen Esther, making him probably her son or the son of Queen Vashti (Esther 2:5-7, 17-18). This second group was counted and numbered under the family heads, particularly of the workers of the household of God.
Objectives
By the end of this session, the learner will have:
- Understood that the second group of returnees from exile was counted based on the heads of families.
- Appreciate that King Artaxerxes, who sent them, could have been a son of Queen Esther, who had a Jewish background.
- Understood that the time span between the first group under Zerubbabel, Ezra 1:1-2, and the second group under Ezra, Ezra 8:1, was about 75 years
Outline
- The second group sent by King Artaxerxes
- Numbered under family heads
Group Study Time
Ezra 8: 1-14
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
- Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
- Read Ezra 8: 1-2. Identify at least three truths revealed about the second group of returnees under Ezra. Who were the returnees, who led them? Where did they come from? Who released them? Which tribe did they come from?
- Read Ezra 8:1. Who released the returnees from exile after 75 years? Read Esther 2:17-18. Who do you think could have been the parents of King Artaxerxes?
- Read Ezra 8:1-14. Approximately how many men were counted? What is a family? Who is the family head? What are the roles of a family head? What happens to a household without a Godly family head?
- What types of families do you know today? Why do you think the people who returned were all listed under the family? What does that tell you about the focus of Ezra’s return?
