Introduction
In this session on Daniel 3:19-30, we focus on understanding the NextGen consequences of choosing to obey Christ alone and the rewards that accompany that choice. After the young men chose to obey God alone, the king became so angry that he heated the furnace seven times hotter. The men were tied up and thrown into the fire, which killed the soldiers. But instead of smelling smoke, the king looked in and saw four men walking around, completely untied and unharmed. The fourth man looked like “a son of the gods.” When they walked out, they didn’t even smell like fire. The king ultimately promoted the very men he had ordered burned alive.
A note for NextGen mentors: For those converting from other faiths, the “fourth man” is a powerful image of a personal, present God. Many religions teach of a distant deity. Highlight that Jesus meets us right in the messy, painful parts of our lives.
Objectives
By the end of this session, the learner will have:
- Recognized that God meets us in our struggles, not just after they are over.
- Seen how standing firm can completely change the minds of skeptics around us.
Outline
- What are the consequences of choosing to obey Christ alone and the rewards that accompany them?
- The fourth man comes in our crisis
- The skeptics witnessed
- Promoted to the next level
Group Study Time
Daniel 3:19-30
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
- Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
- Read Daniel 3:19-25. Retell what happened after the three NextGen refused to worship other gods. In the fire, the king notices that the men are untied and walking with a fourth person in the middle of the fire (Daniel 3:24-25). How does it comfort you to know that Jesus doesn’t just watch our struggles from a distance but steps into them with us? Who do you believe the “fourth man” in the fire represents?
- Read Daniel 3:26-27. What is revealed when the men came out of the fire? Daniel 3:27 says their hair wasn’t singed, their clothes were intact, and they didn’t even smell like smoke. What does this tell us about God’s ability to protect our hearts from bitterness or damage when we go through hard times?
- Read Daniel 3:28-30. What impact does our faithfulness have on skeptics? Notice how the king completely changes his tune in Daniel 3:28-29. How does Nebuchadnezzar’s perspective shift from verse 15 (“what god will be able to rescue you?”) to verse 29 (“no other god can save in this way”)?
- How can your quiet, stubborn faithfulness to Jesus be the very thing that convinces your skeptical friends or family that God is real? How do you feel about the king promoting the same men he ordered burned alive?
