1 Thessalonians 2:13-20
Audio Summary
1 Thessalonians 2:13-20
Context
- Paul reflects on his three-week visit to Thessalonica, teaching Jesus’ suffering, resurrection, ascension, and return; persecution forced him to flee to Berea and Athens.
- Faith grows through receiving God’s word as divine, not human; opposition from Jews and Satan hinders but word spreads.
- Paul’s intense longing to return blocked by Satan; Thessalonians are his hope, joy, crown at Christ’s return.
Receiving God’s Word and Facing Opposition (1 Thessalonians 2:13-20)
- Word as God’s: Thank God for receiving message as God’s word, not human; it works in believers.
- Imitating Persecuted Churches: Imitated Judean churches suffering from Jews who killed Jesus, prophets, drove out apostles; displeasing God, hostile to all.
- Opposition to Gospel: Jews hinder speaking to Gentiles for salvation, filling sins; wrath has come upon them.
- Separation and Longing: Separated briefly in person but not heart; intense longing to see them, Paul tried repeatedly but Satan hindered.
- Glory in Thessalonians: They are hope, joy, crown before Lord Jesus at coming; yes, his glory and joy.
Application
- Receive God’s word as divine to let it work within; endure opposition as Satan’s hindrance, finding glory/joy in spiritual children at Christ’s return.
