The day of the Lord is coming
Introduction
In this session, 2 Peter 3: 1-9, we focus on understanding the dynamics of the day of the Lord by contrasting it to the rapture of the believers, and by listing when it will come, how it will come, why it has been delayed, and how the scooters make fun of that Day. Believers are challenged to live today in the light of the day of the LORD by listing the dos and don’ts.

The day of the Lord is coming
2 Peter 3: 1-9
Audio Summary
2 Peter 3:1-9
Context
- Peter writes to stir pure minds by reminding believers of prophets’ and apostles’ words, countering false teachers who twist Scripture and deny the second coming.
- False teaching is not new, present since Israel’s time, and involves intentional distortion of God’s Word for personal gain like greed or sexual immorality.
Stirring Minds Against Scoffers (2 Peter 3:1-9)
- Purpose of the Letter: Peter writes this second letter to stimulate wholesome thinking and remind believers of holy prophets’ words and the Lord’s command through apostles.
- Warning About Scoffers: In last days, scoffers will follow own evil desires, mocking “Where is the promised coming?”—claiming everything continues as since creation, deliberately forgetting God’s Word created heavens and earth, and by water destroyed the ancient world in the flood.
- God’s Judgment and Patience: Heavens and earth reserved for fire on judgment day when ungodly are destroyed; do not forget—one day with the Lord is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like a day; the Lord is not slow but patient, not wanting anyone to perish but all to come to repentance.
- Purpose: God’s delay in the second coming is patience for salvation; remind believers to stand against scoffers twisting truth, remembering creation, flood, and future judgment.
Application
- Stir pure minds with Scripture to resist false teaching and scoffers; recognize God’s patience as opportunity for repentance, living expectantly for the day of the Lord without being caught off guard.
