The People of the King: Agents of Change Through Preaching and Healing
Introduction
In this passage, Jesus empowers and commissions His twelve disciples, giving them authority to heal the sick, cast out demons, and proclaim the Kingdom of God (to practice and express the ministry of teaching, preaching, and healing). He also instructs them on how to navigate challenges and persecution as they carry out their mission (sending them into the field like sheep among the wolves).
Objectives
By the end of this session, you will have:
- Understood (experienced) the third type of calling (called to lead, to Influence, to make new laws to replace the oppressive, outdated ones, called to advocate) by comparing it with the second calling (called to learn) and the first calling (called to leave).
- Appreciated your six-fold relationships, roles, and responsibilities that affect your effectiveness, namely to God, self, target audience, oppositions, coworkers, and the five resources. (spiritual, human, time, material, and money)
- Understood how to relate to God as their source, how to relate to their God-given resources, and how to relate to the wolves among the sheep.
Outline
- Types of the calling of the people of the King (agents of change).
- Kingdom source and Kingdom resources (channels).
- Agents of change and how they relate to six other Kingdom elements.
Group Study Time
Matthew 10:1-20
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
- Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
What do the verses mean?
(In small groups, attempt the following questions):
- What do you understand by the term “call”? What types of callings do you know? What challenges and opposition do you encounter at each level of calling?
- Who is a change agent? What is legislation (the making of new laws) in any parliament? What authority do you need to cause change? What sets of instructions do you need? What resources do you need to possess to cause change?
- Read Matthew 10:1-4. What do you know about the 12 men Jesus called to Himself? What was their assignment? What was the first set of resources given to them for the assignment?
- Read Matthew 10:5-15. List ten instructions (the second set of resources) given to them to relate to God (the source), relate to the oppressed audience (their assignment), and relate to their hosts in a hostile culture.
- Read Matthew 10:8b. How were agents of change supposed to relate to all the resources given to them (spiritual, human, time, material, and money resources)?
- Read Matthew 10:16-20. List five truths about how the disciple-makers should relate and respond to the wolves (agents of oppression) as they fulfil their assignment.
