Introduction
In this session, we examine Lamentations 3: 1-20 to explore Jeremiah’s trauma and Israel’s suffering. He describes a profound, raw dark night of the soul, where God appears to be the cause of his pain. This highlights that feeling abandoned and expressing intense frustration are natural and healthy ways of grieving before God.

- Acknowledged the reality of suffering, sorrow, and feeling overwhelmed.

Comprehending
- Read Lamentations 3: 1-18. What do you understand by the word trauma? List the key issues the speaker mentions about his suffering or trauma from God. How would you describe the emotional state of the speaker?
- Have you ever experienced a time when your “soul was bereft of peace” like this? Share it with others when you can.
- Read Lamentations 3:19-20. What happens when Jeremiah remembers what God has done to cause them to suffer? Why do you think it is so difficult for many Christians to express anger or deep despair directly to God?
- The speaker attributes his suffering to God’s rod and feels trapped. How do you personally reconcile God’s sovereignty with experiences of deep pain and suffering?
