Introduction
After seeing the wild creatures and spinning wheels, Ezekiel looks up. Above them is a huge, glittering platform, and on top of that is a throne resembling a giant blue sapphire. Sitting on the throne is a figure that appears to be a man, but he radiates like white-hot metal and is surrounded by flames. The entire scene is wrapped in a brilliant rainbow. Ezekiel is so overwhelmed by how powerful and beautiful God is that he doesn’t say a word—he just drops face-first to the ground.

Group Study Time
Ezekiel 1: 22-28
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
- Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
- Read Ezekiel 1:22-27. What is a throne? In your own words, describe God and His glory. How are God and His throne depicted in these verses?
- The divine Throne in Ezekiel 1:22-25 appears amidst a very turbulent and pagan Babylonian environment. How does this imagery contrast with the earthly powers and kingdoms around Ezekiel?
- Read Ezekiel 1: 28. A rainbow often appears after a storm. Why do you think God placed a rainbow next to His intimidating, fiery throne? What does the imagery of a rainbow reveal about God’s character amid judgment?
- Read Ezekiel 1:28. Describe how Ezekiel responded when he saw God’s glory. What does this tell us about how we should approach God in prayer or worship?
- Ezekiel only stood up when he heard God speak. Why is listening to what God says in the Bible more important than just having a cool spiritual experience? How does this vision of God remind you of His sovereignty in the face of today’s challenges?
