Esther Becomes Queen
Esther 2: 1-11
Audio Summary
Esther 2:1-11
Context
- After Vashti’s removal, King Xerxes searches for a new queen among beautiful young virgins from across the empire.
- Esther, a young Jewish orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai, is taken into the harem.
Esther Becomes Queen (Esther 2:1-11)
- Search for a New Queen: After Xerxes’ anger subsides, officials suggest gathering beautiful young virgins for the king to choose a replacement for Vashti.
- Esther Taken to the Harem: In Susa, Mordecai (a Jew from Benjamin, descendant of Kish) raises his orphaned cousin Esther (Hadassah); she is taken to the king’s palace under Hegai’s care.
- Esther’s Favor: Esther pleases Hegai and receives special treatment—beauty treatments, food, maids; she follows Mordecai’s instruction to conceal her Jewish identity.
- Esther’s Selection: After 12 months of preparation (6 months myrrh, 6 months perfumes), Esther is presented to the king; he loves her more than any other and crowns her queen, replacing Vashti.
- Mordecai’s Position: Mordecai sits at the king’s gate; Esther continues obeying him as before.
- Purpose: God sovereignly positions Esther (through Mordecai’s guidance) as queen at the right time, keeping her identity hidden for future deliverance.
Application
- Acknowledge God’s favor in your position; honor mentors and maintain humility; keep some matters private until God’s timing; trust His hidden hand in preparation for greater purposes.
