Introduction
In this passage, Jesus demonstrates His authority to forgive sins and heal the sick, challenging the religious leaders and deepening the faith of His followers. Through these miracles and the calling of Matthew, Jesus reveals His mission to reach out to sinners and bring them into the Kingdom of God. Hchallenged them to leave the old religious school of thought (Old wine skin, old cloth) to the kingdom school. (New wine, new wine skin, and the new cloth)
Objectives
By the end of this session, you will have:
- Described the principles of healing by comparing the six types of healing: physical, mental, emotional, social, moral, and spiritual healing.
- Appreciated that Jesus used instructions (theory) to mentor His disciples on the mountain and then used demonstrations (practical).
- Understood the two different schools of thought—those of the Pharisees and Jesus—by comparing them in the verses provided.

What do the verses mean?
(In small groups, attempt the following questions):
- What is the difference between spiritual healing and physical healing? (Also define mental healing, emotional healing, social healing, and moral healing.)
- Read Matthew 9:1-8. What three lessons was Jesus teaching His disciples through this healing story? (Identify the person who was healed. What are the root causes of some diseases? Who brought the sick to Jesus, etc.)
- Read Matthew 9:9-13. What three truths was Jesus teaching His disciples when He called Matthew, the tax collector?
- Read Matthew 9:14-17. What was different between Jesus’s school of thought and the Pharisees’ school of thought? List three truths Jesus revealed about the two schools. How does fasting take place in Jesus’s school of thought?
