Introduction
In this session, Ezra 6: 1-12, we focus on understanding how Zerubbabel and Joshua were supported in restarting the temple rebuilding after it was halted for 16 years by causing them to receive God’s favor when answering the two threatening questions, “Who authorized you to rebuild the temple and finish it?” The enemies of the temple rebuilding asked King Darius to confirm whether King Cyrus had originally authorized the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. Ezra 5: 17. King Darius confirmed this and commanded the governor of Trans-Euphrates to stay away from God’s work and to support its reconstruction, as seen in Proverbs 16:7.

Darius Decree of Favor to Temple Builders
Ezra 6: 1-12
Audio Summary
Ezra 6:1-12
Context
- After opposition stops temple rebuilding for 16 years, Darius searches the archives and finds Cyrus’ original decree, confirming the Jews’ right to rebuild.
- Darius issues a new, stronger decree supporting the work and threatening severe punishment for anyone who opposes it.
Darius’ Decree Supports Rebuilding (Ezra 6:1-12)
- Search in the Archives: Darius orders a search in the treasure archives in Babylon, then in Ecbatana, where a scroll is found containing Cyrus’ decree to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem.
- Key Points of Cyrus’ Decree (Recited): The temple is to be rebuilt at its original site; costs paid from royal treasury; original gold and silver articles returned; dimensions specified; materials supplied.
- Darius’ New Decree: Darius commands full support—costs paid immediately from taxes of Trans-Euphrates province; no interference; daily supplies given for offerings (young bulls, rams, lambs, wheat, salt); whatever priests request for sacrifices, provide without delay so offerings please the God of heaven and pray for the king’s life and sons.
- Severe Warning: Any king or person who changes or destroys this decree will have a beam torn from their house, set up, and them impaled on it; house made a refuse heap—God who caused His name to dwell there will destroy any who oppose.
- Execution: Darius orders diligent execution—let it be done with all diligence.
- Purpose: God turns opposition into support; a pagan king enforces God’s will, showing divine protection and reversal of enemies’ plans when His people persist.
Application
- Trust God to fight battles and turn enemies into helpers when you obey His call. Persist in rebuilding despite delays—God can use authorities to support His work and punish opposition. Work diligently, knowing God watches over His house and name.
