Colossians 1:1-15
Audio Summary
Colossians 1:1-15
Context
- The book of Colossians addresses how to access help from above, recognizing believers’ dual citizenship: seated with Christ in heavenly places while on earth.
- Help from above is accessed through prayer, fasting, giving, and aligning with God’s will.
- The church in Colossae was started by Epaphras, a disciple of Paul, about 100km east of Ephesus.
- False teachers taught that Jesus is not enough, requiring additional special knowledge or ascetic practices for full access to help.
- Paul writes to counter this, affirming believers’ transfer from darkness to light through Christ.
Greeting and Prayer (Colossians 1:1-15)
- Authors and Recipients: Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God’s will, and Timothy our brother, write to God’s holy people in Colossae, the faithful brothers and sisters in Christ.
- Grace and Peace: Grace and peace come from God our Father.
- Thanksgiving: Always thank God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ when praying for them, having heard of their faith in Christ Jesus and love for all God’s people.
- Hope in Heaven: The faith and love spring from the hope stored up in heaven, heard about in the true message of the gospel.
- Gospel’s Fruit: The gospel has come to them, bearing fruit and growing throughout the world as it has among them since understanding God’s grace in truth.
- Learned from Epaphras: Learned it from Epaphras, dear fellow servant and faithful minister of Christ on their behalf, who reported their love in the Spirit.
- Constant Prayer: Since hearing this, have not stopped praying, asking God to fill with knowledge of His will through all wisdom and understanding given by the Spirit.
- Worthy Lives: So they live lives worthy of the Lord, pleasing Him in every way: bearing fruit in good work, growing in knowledge of God.
- Strengthened: Being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might for great endurance and patience.
- Thankful Joy: Giving joyful thanks to the Father, who qualified to share in the inheritance of His holy people in the kingdom of light.
- Rescue and Transfer: For He has rescued from the dominion of darkness and brought into the kingdom of the Son He loves.
- Redemption: In whom there is redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
