Introduction
In this session, Zechariah 1:7-17, we will focus on understanding the first of the eight visions Zechariah saw of the horses and riders, and on appreciating how the Lord communicates to his representative on earth. We will have time to understand how the angles and the created beings see the world, and how the Lord sees it, and to help us see from his perspective. The vision signifies God’s watchful care, comfort, and active involvement to protect and rebuild Jerusalem, assuring that while other nations are at peace, God is angry at their apathy toward Israel’s suffering. Zechariah saw a man identified as the “Angel of the LORD” (or Lord’s Messenger). Role: He acts as the Commander/Commander-in-Chief of the angelic patrol, monitoring the earth to report on its condition and defending God’s covenant people.
Key Symbolism in Zechariah 1:8-18
- The Red Horse: Symbolizes war, bloodshed, or readiness to execute judgment against the nations that afflicted Israel.
- The Myrtle Trees: Represent the covenant people (Israel/Judah) in a low, humble place (the ravine/hollow), but protected within.
- The Other Horses (Red, Sorrel, White): These represent different agents or angelic beings sent by God to survey and influence the earth, reporting back to the angel of the LORD.
- The Message: Although the earth appears calm, God is displeased with the nations that went too far in punishing Israel, and He will restore Jerusalem (verse 16-17).
