Principles of Doing Good. Saved for good work
Titus 3:1-8
Audio Summary
Titus 3:1-8
Context
- The Cretan church was poisoned by false teaching (legalism, human effort for salvation) amid strongholds of lies, brutality, laziness, and rebellion.
- Paul’s four-step remedy: (1) Expose the poison; (2) Appoint qualified elders as spiritual “doctors”; (3) Promote intergenerational wholesome teaching about Christ; (4) Devote believers to doing good—actions that benefit others, neutralizing poison through practical love.
- Believers are saved not by works but by God’s mercy to become agents of goodness, mirroring Christ’s ultimate good (His death for us).
Devoted to Doing Good (Titus 3:1-8)
- Practical Instructions:
- Submit to rulers and authorities; be obedient and ready for every good work.
- Avoid slander, quarrelling; be peaceable, considerate, and gentle toward everyone.
- Our Former State: Once foolish, disobedient, deceived, enslaved by passions and pleasures; lived in malice, envy, hatred.
- God’s Kindness and Love:
- When God our Savior’s kindness appeared, He saved us—not by our righteous deeds, but by His mercy.
- Through washing of rebirth, renewal by the Holy Spirit (poured generously via Jesus Christ).
- Justified by grace to become heirs with hope of eternal life.
- Trustworthy Saying: Stress these truths so believers devote themselves to good works—excellent and profitable for all.
- Purpose: Salvation transforms us into people eager to do tangible good (counseling, visiting, meeting needs), countering false teaching’s poison by selfless, others-centered action.
Application
- Live submissively, gently, and actively good toward all; remember God’s merciful salvation to fuel devotion to beneficial deeds that neutralize evil and display Christ’s goodness.
