Overcoming guilty conscience by the power of the Holy Spirit P2
Romans 8: 12-27
Audio Summary
Romans 8:12-27
- Context:
- Guilt lingers despite return (Luke 15 prodigal), fueled by rejection (e.g., elder brother/Jews vs. Gentiles); Holy Spirit counters it.
- Romans 8:12-27 builds on freedom from condemnation (v. 1-11), connecting to heavenly blessings.
- Flesh vs. Spirit (Romans 8:12-13):
- No obligation to live by flesh (old life)—it leads to death; Spirit-led life kills misdeeds, granting life.
- Rejects guilt’s pull to past patterns despite acceptance at the father’s table.
- Spirit’s Blessings (Romans 8:14-17):
- Led by Spirit: Children of God (v. 14), not slaves to fear but adopted sons crying “Abba” (v. 15).
- Spirit testifies we’re heirs with Christ (v. 16-17), sharing His suffering and glory—securing identity over guilt.
- Three Groanings (Romans 8:18-27):
- Creation Groans: Frustrated since Adam’s sin, awaits liberation with God’s children (v. 19-21).
- Believers Groan: Eager for body’s redemption despite salvation, enduring suffering (v. 22-25).
- Spirit Groans: Intercedes wordlessly, aiding our weakness as we await glory (v. 26-27).
- Application:
- Holy Spirit replaces guilt with sonship, connecting us to blessings (adoption, inheritance); groaning persists but leads to glory—trust Him as governor.
