Jesus’ message to the false religious Sardis fellowship
Introduction
In this session, Revelation Chapter 2: 18-29, we focus on the state of the bride of Jesus Christ at Thyatira, where idol worship and continuous sacrifice took place without genuine repentance. This fellowship could represent today’s prosperity gospel fellowship guided by the spirit of Jezebel. Because this continued, Jesus was later seen outside his house knocking to be let inside by his bride. The increase of wickedness causes love to grow cold
Objectives
By the end of this session, the learner will have:
- Appreciated that the messages of Revelation chapters 2 and 3 relate to four categories of fellowship: individual believer, family fellowship, local fellowship, and universal fellowship.
- Understood the entire revelation of Jesus to his Bride, the Church, by piecing together his partial revelation to 7 different fellowships.
- Comprehended the entire revelation of Jesus Christ to his Bride by listing how he revealed himself, his commendation to them, his command to them, his caution to them, and his promise to the overcomers.
- Described how the fellowship became cold in their love of Jesus because of increased hostility.

Jesus’ message to the false religious Sardis fellowship
Revelation 3:1-6
Audio Summary
Revelation 3:1-6
- Context:
- John conveys Jesus’ message to Sardis, the fifth of seven churches symbolizing the church’s 2,000-year decline, amidst heresies denying Jesus’ incarnation, using Luke 15 brothers for Jews/Gentiles.
- Sardis, linked to the Protestant Reformation, reflects a church with a false reputation for vitality, marked by religious hypocrisy.
- Rebuke for Spiritual Death (Revelation 3:1-3):
- Jesus, holding the sevenfold Spirit and seven stars, knows Sardis’ reputation for being alive, but declares them spiritually dead, with incomplete works before God (v. 1-2).
- He urges them to wake up, strengthen what remains, remember their initial faith, repent, and hold fast, or He will come unexpectedly like a thief (v. 3).
- Mercy calls for revival to escape judgment.
- Commendation for the Faithful Few (Revelation 3:4):
- A few in Sardis remain untainted by evil, walking with Jesus in white, worthy of His approval (v. 4).
- Mercy honors their steadfast purity.
- Promise to Victors (Revelation 3:5-6):
- Victorious believers will be clothed in white, their names secured in the Book of Life, and acknowledged before God and His angels (v. 5).
- Jesus calls all to hear the Spirit’s message (v. 6).
- Mercy assures eternal security for the faithful.
- Application:
- Avoid Sardis’ hypocrisy—serving without acknowledging God; repent, revive true faith, and honor God in all works—mercy restores life to a dying church for eternal reward.
