Paying attention to the spoken and written word
Introduction
In this session, 2 Peter 1: 12-21, we focus on understanding the foundation of our faith in God through Jesus Christ, our Lord, through the Spoken word (Rhema word) and the written prophetic word (Logos). We see the danger of not growing in that grace, the benefits of growing in His grace, and how to grow in faith in our lord Jesus by grace.

Paying attention to the spoken and written word
2 Peter 1: 12-21
Audio Summary
2 Peter 1:12-21
Context
- Peter writes his final words, knowing his death is imminent, to remind believers of truths and stir their pure minds against false teaching and doctrine.
- The letter emphasizes building faith through the spoken (rhema) and written (logos) Word of God, countering perversion by knowing Jesus as suffering servant, glorified Lord, reigning priest, and soon-coming King.
Paying Attention to Spoken and Written Words (2 Peter 1:12-21)
- Peter’s Intent to Remind: Peter always reminds believers of truths while alive, knowing he will soon put off his body as the Lord showed; aims to refresh memory so they recall these after his departure.
- Stirring Pure Minds: Not negligent to remind, as it is right to refresh memory and stir sincere minds with these truths.
- Eyewitness Account of Christ’s Majesty: Did not follow cleverly devised stories but were eyewitnesses of Christ’s majesty; received honor and glory from God the Father at the transfiguration—”This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased”—heard this voice from the Majestic Glory.
- Prophetic Message Confirmed: The prophetic message is completely reliable—pay attention to it as a light shining in darkness until the day dawns and morning star rises in hearts.
- Origin of Prophecy: No prophecy of Scripture came from prophet’s own interpretation or human will, but prophets spoke from God as carried along by the Holy Spirit.
- Purpose: Strengthen against false teaching by familiarity with the truth; know the Word to discern and overcome perversion.
Application
- Pay attention to the spoken and written Word to build faith and memory; study eyewitness accounts and prophecies to know Christ fully, enabling discernment of false doctrine and victorious living.
