Introduction
In this session, Nehemiah 7:5-73, we focus on Censusing, understanding God’s people, and preparing for renewal. The city was large, but its population was small. Nehemiah felt divinely guided to record the people and confirm that the city’s spiritual foundation was secure. By referencing an old registry from Zerubbabel’s era, he reminded the nation of their shared heritage, identity, and the significance of their financial and spiritual commitments.

Group Study Time
Nehemiah 7:5-73
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
- Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
- Read Nehemiah 7: 5. Nehemiah noted that God put it into his heart to gather the people. How does God encourage us today to take responsibility for our church and community?
- Read Nehemiah 7:6-63. What categories are used to census the people? Why did Nehemiah undertake the long, seemingly dry task of census-taking and recording a list of names? What does this reveal about how God perceives individuals?
- Read Nehemiah 7:64-65. Some priests could not prove their genealogy and were excluded until the Urim and Thummim could decide. What does this teach us about the importance of maintaining doctrinal purity and integrity in the church?
- Read Nehemiah 7:70-73; the leaders and the people gave generously to God’s work. How does our financial support and sacrificial giving demonstrate our commitment to our spiritual home?
