Nehemiah Leading by Example
Introduction
In this session, we explore how to manage internal crises, tackle economic injustice in the community, and practice godly leadership (Nehemiah 5:14-19). Nehemiah 5 shifts focus from external threats, like enemies outside the wall, to internal issues, namely oppression within the community. During the rebuilding efforts, the poor face severe financial hardships caused by famine and high taxes, worsened by wealthy Jewish leaders charging interest and enslaving brothers for profit. Nehemiah responds with righteous anger, calling for economic fairness and repayment, all while exemplifying selfless and holy leadership

Group Study Time
Nehemiah 5: 14-19
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
- Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
- Read Nehemiah 5: 14-15. Nehemiah did not take the “governor’s food allowance.” What does this tell us about his motivation? What does it mean that Nehemiah acted this way “because of the fear of the Lord”?
- Read Nehemiah 5: 16-19. What do these verses reveal about Nehemiah’s generosity? Instead of exploiting the people, how did Nehemiah use his resources?
- Read Nehemiah 5: 19. What did Nehemiah request from God after what he did? How does this differ from serving for applause or recognition?
- Application: In what ways are you tempted to use your position to gain more, rather than to serve others? What is one area of financial stewardship or generosity where you need to apply the “fear of God” this week?
