Introduction
In this session, Nehemiah 9:32-38 marks the climax of Israel’s longest recorded prayer, shifting the nation from deep corporate confession to an official, written covenant. It emphasizes God’s justice amid ongoing rebellion, the severe consequences of sin, and the urgent need for a renewed, tangible commitment to Him.

Nehemiah 9:32-38
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.

Comprehending
- Read Nehemiah 9: 32-37. What does God’s justice entail? Identify three painful truths about accepting God’s justice in this prayer. Why is it significant to acknowledge God’s justice during difficult times or when facing consequences?
- Nehemiah 9: 32. The Israelites begin this passage by describing God as “great, mighty, and awesome.” How does their view of God influence how they face their current struggles?
- In Nehemiah 9:33, they admit, “You have been just in all that has come upon us, for you have dealt faithfully and we have acted wickedly.” Why is it so hard for us to acknowledge God’s justice when we face hardships?
- Read Nehemiah 9: 34-35. How can prosperity and comfort sometimes lead us to become independent of God? How can you distinguish between enjoying God’s blessings and letting those blessings draw your heart away from Him?
- Read Nehemiah 9:38. The Israelites made a binding written agreement to follow God’s commands. What is your view on making a covenant during prayer? What practical, physical steps can your group or church take to tangibly recommit yourselves to God? What is the danger of saying “I’m sorry” to God without taking practical, tangible steps to change?
