The Practices of the King: Jesus Bound the Strong Man to Take His Plunder
Introduction
In this session, Jesus, the Son of God, with the Holy Spirit upon Him, defeated the strong man in the wilderness through prayer and fasting. He delivered the captives/plunder from Satan’s grip, and He continued to empower His followers to be influential, resilient, resourceful, and productive in the face of their enemies.
Objectives
By the end of this session, you will have:
- Appreciated the importance of investing in yourself, your target audience, and your disciples/mentees by examining Jesus’s ministry.
- Understood the truth about temptations and how to overcome them by following Jesus’s model.
- Known the order of Jesus’s public ministry: prayer and fasting for Himself, teaching for His disciples, preaching and healing for the crowds.
- Acknowledged the significance of the Holy Spirit’s baptism for ministry by understanding the Holy Spirit with you, the Spirit in you, and the Spirit upon you.

Jesus was the Expected Messiah as expressed through:
- The Holy Spirit upon Jesus.
- Defeating the strong man in the wilderness through threefold investment.
- Overcoming temptation (Jesus’s model).
- Jesus invested in Himself through prayer and fasting.
- Jesus invested in His mentees (disciples) by selecting and teaching them.
- Jesus invested in His target audience through preaching and healing.

Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
- Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
What do the verses mean? (In small groups, attempt the following questions):
- What is temptation? Why does the devil tempt us? How can we overcome temptations?
- Discuss the difference between the Holy Spirit being WITH you, IN you, and UPON you.
- Read Matthew 4:1. What is baptism in the Spirit? Why does the Spirit come upon us? Why did the Spirit lead Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted?
- Read Matthew 4:2-11. What are the three temptations Jesus faced? How did Jesus overcome these temptations? (Temptations for the Father’s provisions, the Father’s protection, and the Father’s promises; or temptations related to glory, wealth, and relationships).
- What is the significance of quoting scriptures? What is the difference between how Satan quoted scriptures and how Jesus did? (Matthew 4:4, Matthew 4:6, Matthew 4:7, Matthew 4:10).
- Read Matthew 4:12-17. Where did Jesus begin His public ministry? (Context)
- What are the two reasons why Jesus left Nazareth for Capernaum in Galilee? (Matthew 4:12-16). What additional reason is given in Luke 4:16-30?
- Read Matthew 4:17. What was the central message of Jesus’s preaching?
- What is the Kingdom of Heaven? What were the people expected to do because the Kingdom was near?
- Read Matthew 4:18-22. List three key things revealed about Jesus’s first disciples (their selection, the cost of following Him).
- Discuss the structure of Jesus’s ministry that drew crowds from various places: teaching, preaching, and healing (Matthew 4:23-25).

- List three lessons you have learnt as an agent of change that you would like to put into practice and teach others about.
