Rejection by Religious Leaders: Overcoming Faith Roadblocks
Introduction
In Matthew 15:21-39, we witness the remarkable faith of a mother caregiver who overcomes significant roadblocks to attain rest for her soul and that of her daughter. This passage provides insight into the critical condition of the young daughter, symbolising those who are young in faith, and highlights the challenges she faced before Jesus healed her. These issues serve as motivating factors for effective ministry. Additionally, this session introduces us to the process Jesus used to develop leadership traits in His disciples.
Objectives
By the end of this session, you will have:
- Understood how a caregiver (loving mother) was able to overcome faith roadblocks and secure her daughter’s healing and wellness (rest for their souls).
- Learned principles for handling interruptions during your resting time (Me-time) by observing Jesus’s model.
- Appreciated the ultimate result of healing ministry, which is glorifying God alone.
Outline

- Overcoming faith roadblocks.
- A mother (caregiver) and her daughter secure the rest of their souls.

Group Study Time
Matthew 15:21-39
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
- Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
What do the verses mean?
(In small groups, attempt the following questions):
- What did you discover about God, His people, and the enemy in this passage? What lessons have you learned from the passage?
- What are faith roadblocks? What are our natural negative reactions when we encounter faith roadblocks toward the rest of our souls? (e.g., giving up and turning back, etc.) How do we overcome them? Discuss.
- Read Matthew 15:21-22. Describe how, for the second time, Jesus and His disciples’ time alone was interrupted by a traumatised caregiver (mother). The hungry multitude caused the first interruption.
- Describe the three critical states of the girl that made the mother (caregiver) seek a solution. (Matthew 15:22-23: harassment, helplessness, and no helper, no shepherd)
- Read Matthew 15:21-28. List five faith roadblocks the traumatised caregiver (mother) had to overcome before finding rest for her soul—her emotional healing and that of her child.
- Read Matthew 15:29-31. List three truths revealed about miracles that relate to soul rest. What is the chief result of any healing ministry? Discuss the three options: self, others, or God.
- Read Matthew 15:32-39. Write down and discuss at least five leadership or servanthood traits you learn from Jesus’s feeding of the 4,000 men in the wilderness. (For example: planning, brainstorming, delegation—list five more here.)
