Jesus’ Betrayal by a Friend and the Scheming by His Adversaries
Introduction
In Matthew 26:1-30, Jesus prepares His disciples for His impending death. He reveals the Pharisees’ plot to kill Him and the betrayal by a familiar friend. During this session, Jesus also provides a crucial lesson on worship in the house of Simon the leper, comparing the attitudes of Judas and Mary. Worship, as Jesus teaches, is about willingly giving back to God when enlightened by His Word.
Objectives
By the end of this session, you will have:
- Understood how Jesus’ enemies plotted His death from outside and how He was betrayed from within, focusing on the roles of the Pharisees, the Disciples, and Judas.
- Identified how worship and sharing of the Holy Communion become channels of grace when enduring the valley of the shadow of death, by examining how Jesus prepared His disciples for His death.
Outline
- High-level persecution of Jesus.
- Levels of persecution: Hate, exclusion, insults, rejection.
- Plotting and betrayal by one of the most trusted friends (Judas).
- Worship and Holy Communion as significant channels of grace during rejection.
