Introduction
In Matthew 22:1-22 Jesus continues to address the stumbling blocks that hinder making Christ known, particularly to those imprisoned by harmful religion—Part 7. In response to the Pharisees’ question about His authority and the One who gave it to Him, Jesus shares a parable about guests invited to a wedding party. Through this parable, He reveals four categories of sinners and their responses to the gospel invitation. Additionally, Jesus cautions His disciples about the dangers of being trapped by world religions into breaking the laws of the land, particularly concerning paying taxes.
Objectives
By the end of this session, you will have:
- Understood the doctrine of authority on earth to free those in prison by comparing four inappropriate ways sinners respond to the gospel invitation.
- Been cautioned that while fulfilling the duty of inviting sinners to the wedding feast, you may also face traps designed to lead you into sin and potentially breaking the laws of the land.
Outline
- Four types of sinners invited to the feast.
- Testing Jesus on breaking the law of paying taxes.
- Three types of authority: Ultimate, delegated, and enslaving.
- Traps and how to overcome them.
Group Study Time
Matthew 22:1-22
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
- Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
What do the verses mean?
(In small groups, attempt the following questions. Focus on God’s attitudes and the people’s character/attributes.)
- What is a wedding invitation? How do people typically respond to invitations?
- Jesus gave a third parable to show how people respond to authority from a father who had prepared a feast for His son. Read Matthew 22:1-14. Identify the characters or people mentioned in this parable. What was the role of each person? List four inappropriate ways the invited persons responded to the invitation (Matthew 22:3-6 & Matthew 22:11-13). What are the four categories of sinners today who are invited to Christ’s salvation?
- Who are the people called but not chosen? What did Jesus do to those who rejected Christ’s invitation? (Matthew 22:11-14)
- Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, was also tested through the question of paying taxes. Read Matthew 22:15-22 and identify three ways the Pharisees attempted to trap Jesus with the treasonous act of not paying taxes to the government of the day. How did Jesus respond to this trap?
- What five lessons do you learn about sinners’ responses to our gospel invitations and how they attempt to trap us in our line of duty?
