Introduction
In Matthew 16:1-28, we confront the stumbling blocks that hinder truly knowing (experiencing) Christ. This session explores the roles of signs, guesses, and revelations in understanding the reality of a person, place, or thing—in this case, Jesus. While signs must be properly interpreted to point to the truth, and guesses leave room for multiple interpretations, only revelation provides the absolute truth. Jesus remains the most misunderstood person on earth today, often explained through misinterpreted signs or human guesses. However, God’s revelation, as found in the Bible, gives us the complete truth of who Jesus is. This session also introduces four levels of faith in Christ: no faith, little faith, saving faith, and serving faith.
Objectives
By the end of this session, you will have:
- Understood the role of signs, guesses, and revelations in understanding the person of Christ on earth (Emmanuel) by examining the explanations provided in the stories.
- Understood three barriers (or stumbling blocks) to knowing Jesus Christ by exploring the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees, the lack of revelation, and Satan’s influence in elevating humanism above divine revelation (“Get behind me, Satan” – Matthew 16:23).
Outline
- Signs and their interpretation, guesses, and revelation.
- Who is Jesus? Who do people say Jesus is?
- Barriers to knowing Jesus.
- Four levels of faith.
Group Study Time
Matthew 16:1-28
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
- Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
What do the verses mean?
(In small groups, attempt the following questions):
- What did you discover about God, His people, and the enemy in this passage? What lessons have you learned from the passage?
- Read Matthew 16:1-4. What is a sign? What three things did Jesus say about signs in this conversation? What does the sign of Jonah point to?
- Read Matthew 16:5-13. What is yeast? As a sign, what does the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees represent? What warning did Jesus give His disciples about the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees? How do these verses show the difficulty of interpreting the sign of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees?
- Read Matthew 16:13-15. What were the human guesses (by both the people and the disciples) about who Jesus was?
- Read Matthew 16:16-20; Matthew 16:21-28. List at least three revelations (truths) about the Son of Man (a sign of Jesus Christ), including His life, death, and resurrection.
- What did Jesus reveal about His bride/the Church (present, past, and future) in verses Matthew 16:18-19 and Matthew 16:24-26?
- Read Matthew 16:20. Why did Jesus warn His disciples not to tell anyone who He was, even after the revelation?
