Introduction
In this session, Luke 13: 1-17, Jesus helps the agents of change to reflect on the question he had asked in Luke 12::57, “Why don’t you judge for yourself what is right? ” A good judgment is known when one repents or changes his mind based on information. Change of mind is known only through change of action. Jesus challenged people’s wrong assumptions on why good people perish (due to sins), Jesus pointed out that hypocrisy or putting on a mask is the key reason for not repenting, even after giving more information.
In Luke 13:22, Jesus showed that the best way to help people judge for themselves what is right is through effective, systematic teaching in both villages and towns.
Objectives

- Identified three reasons why people don’t judge (decide) what is right for themselves by looking at the stories provided.

Group Study Time
Luke 13: 1-17
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.
- Start with a heartfelt prayer, inviting God to guide and bless your understanding.
- Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
- What is repenting? How do you know one has repented? What are the consequences of not repenting?
- Insight: Repenting means changing your mind or thinking from one way to another. Repenting is about decision-making; it’s about making a judgment for yourself, not being forced; it’s about being willing to change based on information, knowledge, or truth presented.
- Read Luke 12: 57. Why don’t people judge for themselves what is right? Why don’t people repent on their own? Why don’t people change their minds for themselves?
- Read Luke 13: 1-5. From the two stories given, what were the people’s mistaken beliefs about the victims’ perishing? How did Jesus correct that thinking? What did Jesus say would be the consequences of wrong thinking (not repenting)?
- Read Luke 13: 6-9. In this parable, what did Jesus say about repenting (changing one’s mind on cutting down the unproductive fig tree 🎄)
- Read Luke 13: 10-17. What were religious leaders’ minds or thoughts about healing on the Sabbath? Why didn’t they judge what was right about the healing of the sabbath? Why did they refuse to change their minds even after knowing that Jesus was the Lord of the sabbath?
