Jesus sent out the 72 disciples for a practical
Luke 10: 1-24
Audio Summary
Luke 10:1-24
Context
- Jesus expands His ministry by sending out 72 disciples, beyond the original 12, to prepare towns for His visit.
- This shows a threefold strategy: Jesus works while disciples observe, they work together, and now disciples go ahead while He observes.
- Focus on mission instructions, warnings to unrepentant towns, and disciples’ privileged revelation.
Sending the 72 and Their Return (Luke 10:1-24)
- Appointment and Instructions (vv. 1-4): Jesus appoints 72 others, sends them in pairs ahead to towns He plans to visit; pray for harvest workers, go like lambs among wolves, carry no purse, bag, or sandals, greet no one on the road.
- Mission Guidelines (vv. 5-9): Enter houses with peace greeting—if welcomed, peace rests; if not, returns; stay in one house, eat/drink what’s offered as workers deserve wages; heal the sick, proclaim the kingdom of God is near.
- Response to Rejection (vv. 10-12): If town rejects, go into streets and say even its dust clings no more—shake it off as testimony; it will be worse for them on judgment day than for Sodom.
- Woe to Unrepentant Towns (vv. 13-16): Woe to Chorazin and Bethsaida—if miracles done there had been in Tyre/Sidon, they would have repented; worse for them than Tyre/Sidon at judgment. Woe to Capernaum—lifted to heavens but brought to Hades. Rejecting disciples rejects Jesus and the One who sent Him.
- Disciples’ Joyful Return (vv. 17-20): The 72 return joyful—demons submit in Jesus’ name; Jesus says He saw Satan fall like lightning, gives authority over enemy power, nothing harms them; rejoice not in power over spirits but that names are written in heaven.
- Jesus’ Rejoicing and Revelation (vv. 21-24): Jesus rejoices in the Spirit, thanks Father for hiding these from wise/learned but revealing to little children—as it pleased Him; all things committed to Son, who reveals the Father. Privately to disciples: Blessed are your eyes and ears—many prophets/kings longed to see/hear what you do but did not.
- Purpose: Equip disciples for mission with authority, instructions, and warnings; emphasize rejoicing in salvation over power, and privilege of revelation.
Application
- Follow Jesus’ mission strategy: pray for workers, proclaim the kingdom simply, respond to rejection with testimony, rejoice in heavenly citizenship, and treasure the revealed truths prophets longed for.
