Developing a greatness attitude on managing money, moment, and men
Introduction
While the disciples were arguing about who was the greatest, Jesus defined the greatest as being the servant among them. Luke 9:46-48. In this session, Luke 12:31-48, Jesus. proposes five servant-hold attitudes and encourages agents of change to develop greatness as they wait for the coming of the LORD. Those who live at the brink of eternity keep themselves pure (1 John 3:3) and develop a significant servant-hold attitude. Audio Summary
Luke 12:31-48
Context
- Jesus prepares disciples for opposition from spiritual leaders like Pharisees and Sadducees, who hinder people from entering the kingdom.
- He teaches on living ready for His return, emphasizing stewardship and accountability amid hostility to the kingdom and its workers.
Living Ready for the Master’s Return (Luke 12:31-48)
- Seek the Kingdom First: Do not worry—seek God’s kingdom, and all needs will be provided; the Father gladly gives the kingdom; sell possessions, give to the poor, store treasure in heaven where it is secure from thieves and moths.
- Be Watchful Servants: Keep hearts ready where treasure is; be like servants dressed and waiting for the master’s return from a wedding banquet, lamps burning—blessed if found watching, even if he comes late at night.
- The Master Serves the Faithful: If the master finds servants alert, he will dress to serve, have them recline, and wait on them—blessed those ready, as the Son of Man comes at an unexpected hour.
- Parable of the Faithful Manager: Peter asks if for them or all; Jesus replies: Who is the faithful, wise manager the master puts over household to give food at proper time? Blessed if found doing so upon return—promoted over all possessions.
- Unfaithful Manager’s Punishment: If the manager thinks the master delays, beats servants, eats/drinks/gets drunk—the master returns unexpectedly, cuts him to pieces, assigns with unbelievers.
- Degrees of Accountability: Servants who know the master’s will but do not prepare or act accordingly get severe beating; those unknowing but deserving punishment get lighter beating—from everyone given much, much required; to whom much entrusted, much demanded.
- Purpose: Live as faithful stewards managing kingdom resources, time, and workers well; be watchful and responsible, as judgment varies by knowledge and trust given.
Application
- Seek God’s kingdom first, trusting His provision; live ready and watchful for Christ’s return, stewarding responsibilities faithfully to receive reward rather than punishment based on accountability.
