Confronting the poison of greed, covetousness, and worry
Luke 12: 13-30
Audio Summary
Luke 12:13-30
Context
- Jesus teaches a large crowd after a man asks Him to settle an inheritance dispute, using it to warn against greed and worry.
- He addresses these as poisons that hinder trust in God, especially in a generation influenced by unbelief and material focus.
Warning Against Greed and Worry (Luke 12:13-30)
- Greed and the Rich Fool (vv. 13-21): A man asks Jesus to divide an inheritance. Jesus warns against all kinds of greed—life does not consist in possessions. He tells the parable of a rich man whose abundant harvest leads him to build bigger barns for security and ease. God calls him a fool—his life ends that night, and his wealth goes to others. The point: hoard for self, not rich toward God.
- Do Not Worry About Life (vv. 22-30): Do not worry about food or clothing—life is more than these. Consider ravens: God feeds them. Consider lilies: God clothes them in splendor. If He cares for birds and flowers, how much more for you? Worry does not add to life but shows lack of faith. Seek God’s kingdom first—He knows your needs and provides.
- Purpose: Greed and worry stem from unbelief in God’s care and provision; they poison faith and trust, leading people away from kingdom priorities.
Application
- Reject greed by being rich toward God, not hoarding possessions. Defeat worry by trusting the Father’s provision, focusing on His kingdom, and seeking Him first—let faith replace fear and anxiety.
