An evil generation of this age demands signs
Introduction
In this session, Luke 11:29-39, Jesus wanted his disciples to know the current state of the people of this generation and their leaders. The crowd’s behavior is highly affected by its leaders. Whenever the leadership sees wrongly, the people will be misled too. Before trying to be an agent of transformation into any people group, first get to know who their leaders are and what their ideology is. Jesus rebuked the crowd of this generation as wicked people who only follow miracles. He also rebuked the leadership of this generation for having misled the people by hiding the key to knowledge.

An Evil Generation and Spiritual Warnings (Luke 11:29-39)
- Evil Generation Seeks Signs: As crowds grow, Jesus calls them evil for demanding a sign; no sign given except Jonah’s—Jonah a sign to Ninevites, Son of Man to this generation.
- Judgment from Queen of South and Ninevites: Queen of South will condemn this generation—she came from afar to hear Solomon’s wisdom, but something greater than Solomon is here; Ninevites repented at Jonah’s preaching, but something greater than Jonah is here, yet no repentance.
- Lamp of the Body: The eye is the body’s lamp—if good, whole body full of light; if evil, full of darkness. Be careful your light is not darkness; if full of light without dark spots, you shine like a lamp.
- Woes to Pharisees: A Pharisee invites Jesus to eat; Jesus does not wash first, surprising him. Jesus says Pharisees clean outside of cup/plate but inside full of greed/wickedness—give inside as alms for true cleanliness. Woe for tithing mint/rue/herbs but neglecting justice/love of God—do both. Woe for loving best seats in synagogues and respectful greetings in markets. Woe for being like unmarked graves people walk over unknowingly.
- Purpose: An evil generation seeks signs over repentance; fill life with God’s light to avoid spiritual darkness and demonic return; true righteousness is internal, not just external show.
Application
- Repent without demanding signs, learning from Jonah and the Queen of South; guard your “eye” to fill with light, not darkness; prioritize justice and love over rituals, ensuring inner purity matches outer actions.
