Winning soldiers and secret believers at the Cross
Introduction
In the current session, John 19:31-42, we focus on identifying the proof and indicators of the death and burial of Jesus from the account of the eyewitnesses of John, from those who killed him, from those who buried him and the governing authority. Later, we will learn what the secret believers (Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus.) did to the body of Jesus. Understanding the indicators of the death and the burial of the body of Jesus (which covers when, how, where, and who was a witness) helps us to continue to witness to the critics of the kingdom
Objectives
By the end of this session, the learner will have:

Winning soldiers and secret believers at the Cross
John 19: 31-42
Audio Summary
John 19:31-42
- Context:
- Jesus anticipated His crucifixion, saying, “When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself” (John 12:32), a metaphor for the cross as the point of drawing diverse souls.
- The cross wins hearts and counters critics who deny Jesus’ death and burial.
- Proofs of Jesus’ Death:
- Jewish Leaders’ Request: During the preparation day before a special Sabbath, they asked Pilate to break the legs of the crucified to hasten death and remove bodies, confirming Jesus was on the cross (John 19:31).
- Soldiers’ Witness: Soldiers broke the thieves’ legs but found Jesus already dead, piercing His side with a spear, fulfilling Scripture (no bones broken, Psalm 34:20; blood and water flowed, John 19:34).
- John’s Testimony: John, an eyewitness, confirmed Jesus’ death, noting His words entrusting Mary to him (John 19:26-27), validating the event.
- Proofs of Jesus’ Burial:
- Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus: Secret disciples, they requested Jesus’ body from Pilate, who granted permission; they wrapped it with spices and linen per Jewish custom, burying it in a tomb near Golgotha (John 19:38-40).
- Pilate’s Confirmation: Pilate, having washed his hands of Jesus’ death, authorized the body’s removal, affirming it was Jesus buried.
- Winning Souls at the Cross:
- The cross drew thieves, soldiers, women, disciples (John 19:17-30), and now secret disciples (Joseph, Nicodemus), showing its power to transform diverse hearts.
- Critics denying Jesus’ crucifixion and burial are refuted by these witnesses—leaders, soldiers, John, Joseph, Nicodemus, Pilate.
- Application:
- Believers must use these proofs to counter critics, testifying to Jesus’ death and burial as the foundation of faith, drawing all to Him.
