1 John 4: 1-10
Audio Summary
1 John 4:1-10
- Context:
- John, celebrating Jesus’ resurrection, counters heresies denying His incarnation, using Luke 15 brothers to reflect Jews/Gentiles misled by Antichrist spirits.
- Testing spirits ensures fellowship aligns with God’s truth.
- Testing the Spirits (1 John 4:1-3):
- Don’t trust every spirit—test them to discern God’s origin (v. 1); spirits affirming Jesus’ incarnation are from God; those denying it are Antichrist, already active (v. 2-3).
- Mercy equips believers to reject falsehood.
- Victory Over Falsehood (1 John 4:4-6):
- Believers, with God’s Spirit, overcome worldly spirits of falsehood (v. 4); worldly spirits speak for the world, but God’s Spirit aligns with truth, heard by God’s own (v. 5-6).
- Mercy empowers triumph over Antichrist lies.
- Love as God’s Mark (1 John 4:7-10):
- Love one another, for love is from God; those who love are born of God, unlike unloving antichrists (v. 7-8); God’s love sent Jesus as atonement (v. 9-10).
- Mercy’s love, shown in Christ, defines true fellowship.
- Application:
- Test spirits by their view of Jesus’ incarnation, embrace God’s Spirit for victory, and love as God loves—mercy guards fellowship against heresy’s deception.
