Dynamics of Abiding in the True Fellowship
1 John 2: 15-29
Audio Summary
1 John 2:15-29
- Context:
- John addresses heresies (denying Jesus’ incarnation) as a “cancer” dividing the church, using Luke 15 brothers to reflect Jews/Gentiles lured by the world.
- After Jerusalem’s fall (A.D. 70), love wanes—John reveals why some abide or leave fellowship.
- Rejecting Worldly Love (1 John 2:15-17):
- Don’t love the world—lust of flesh, eyes, and pride of life—or the Father’s love fades (v. 15-16); worldly desires pass, but God’s will endures (v. 17).
- Mercy redirects love to God, resisting heresy’s pull.
- Antichrist’s Deception (1 John 2:18-23):
- Last hour: antichrists (denying Jesus as Christ) leave fellowship, proving they never belonged (v. 18-19); denying the Son rejects the Father (v. 22-23).
- Mercy anchors truth—acknowledging Jesus preserves fellowship.
- Abiding through Anointing (1 John 2:24-29):
- Hold to the original gospel to abide in Father and Son (v. 24); the Holy Spirit’s anointing teaches truth, countering lies, ensuring eternal life (v. 25-27).
- Mercy sustains—abide in Christ for confidence at His coming (v. 28-29).
- Application:
- Abide in fellowship by rejecting worldly lust, denying antichrists, and clinging to the Spirit’s anointing—God’s mercy guards against heresy’s cancer.
