Using God’s lens to view others, tomorrow, and the revealed will
James 4: 11-17
Audio Summary
James 4:11-17
Context
- Continuing from the root of conflicts in evil heart desires and the need for submission to God, this section addresses slander, judging, and arrogant planning as forms of interference hindering unity and blessing among scattered missionary believers.
- Emphasizes humility, acknowledging God’s sovereignty over the law and future, to resolve disputes and live righteously.
Confronting Slander, Judging, and Arrogance (James 4:11-17)
- Do Not Slander or Judge Brothers: Do not slander one another—speaking against a brother or judging him speaks against and judges the law; to keep the law, do not become a judge, as there is only one Lawgiver and Judge who can save and destroy—who are you to judge your neighbor?
- Avoid Arrogant Planning: Do not boast about tomorrow’s plans (e.g., going to a city, doing business, making profit), as you do not know what tomorrow brings—life is a mist that appears briefly then vanishes; instead, say “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”
- Arrogance and Boasting are Evil: Such boasting is arrogant and evil; knowing what is good but not doing it is sin—avoid schemes to outshine others, viewing self, future, and others through God’s eyes with humility.
- Transforming Conflicts: Resolve conflicts by breaking evil hearts (contrite heart), submitting to God, resisting the devil, drawing near to Him, purifying hearts from double-mindedness, and humbling selves for exaltation.
- Purpose: Unity of purpose brings anointing and blessing (Psalm 133); confront heart interferences like slander and arrogance to fulfill the mission of blessing nations without internal fights.
Application
- Avoid slander and judging by recognizing God’s sole authority; plan humbly with “If the Lord wills,” do known good to avoid sin, and break proud hearts through submission to promote unity and blessing among believers.
