From the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks
James 3: 13-18
Audio Summary
James 3:13-18
Context
- Chapter 3 addresses the power of the tongue, which can produce life or death, blessing or cursing, and is untamable by humans—only God can control it.
- Focus shifts to the source of wisdom influencing the tongue and actions, distinguishing heavenly wisdom from earthly or demonic, to guide minority believers in impacting unbelievers positively.
Wisdom from Heaven vs. Earthly Wisdom (James 3:13-18)
- Showing True Wisdom: Who is wise and understanding? Show it by living honorably with deeds done in humility from wisdom; control the tongue by connecting to the right wisdom source, as from the heart’s abundance the mouth speaks.
- Earthly Wisdom: If harboring bitter envy and selfish ambition in hearts, do not boast or deny truth; such “wisdom” is earthly, unspiritual, demonic—where envy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil practice.
- Heavenly Wisdom: Wisdom from heaven is first pure, then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, sincere; peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.
- Three Sources of Wisdom: Discern wisdom’s origin— from God (heavenly), demons (demonic), or men (earthly)—to ensure teaching and actions come from a transformative heart source, empowering mission to impact nations.
- Purpose: Work on the heart as the source, plugging the tongue into heavenly wisdom to produce righteous deeds and avoid evil, enabling believers to bless and teach effectively among unbelievers.
Application
- Examine heart’s wisdom source to control speech and actions; pursue heavenly wisdom through purity, peace, and mercy to sow righteousness and fulfill mission without disorder or evil.
