Confronting quarrels and conflicts
James 4: 1-10
Audio Summary
James 4:1-10
Context
- Building on the source of wisdom and the tongue’s power, chapter 4 addresses the root of conflicts among believers—unresolved evil desires in the heart leading to quarrels and fights.
- Believers as missionaries among unbelievers must confront internal conflicts to live influentially and please God alone.
Confronting Quarrels and Conflicts (James 4:1-10)
- Source of Conflicts: Fights and quarrels come from battles within, from evil desires warring in members; desire something but don’t get it, leading to killing, coveting, and fighting—cannot have because not asked of God.
- Wrong Motives in Prayer: Even when asking, do not receive because motives are wrong—want to spend on selfish pleasures; friendship with the world (adultery) makes one God’s enemy, as loving the world means hating God.
- God’s Jealousy and Grace: The Spirit in believers jealously longs for them; God gives more grace, opposing the proud but giving grace to the humble (quoting Proverbs).
- Solution: Submit and Humble Before God: Submit to God, resist the devil (he will flee); draw near to God (He will draw near); wash hands (sinners), purify hearts (double-minded); grieve, mourn, change laughter to mourning and joy to gloom; humble selves before the Lord (He will lift up).
- Spiritual Warfare: Conflicts reflect spiritual battles; cure through broken, contrite hearts allowing God to remove evil motives and desires.
- Purpose: Resolve heart issues to end conflicts, submitting fully to God for grace and exaltation, avoiding double-mindedness that pleases self or world instead of God.
Application
- Examine heart desires causing conflicts, submit to God, resist evil, draw near with humility and purification to receive grace, end quarrels, and live as faithful missionaries pleasing God alone.
