Warnings and encouragement in the race of faith
Hebrews 12: 14-29
Audio Summary
Hebrews 12:14-29
Context
- Building on the call to run the faith race with perseverance, this section warns against interferences like bitterness or refusing God’s voice, contrasting old covenant terror with new covenant access.
- Emphasizes careful listening to God speaking through His Son, restoring direct communication lost to sin, for an unshakable kingdom.
Interferences in the Race and Listening to God (Hebrews 12:14-29)
- Pursue Peace and Holiness: Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and be holy—without holiness, no one sees the Lord; ensure no one falls short of God’s grace, preventing bitter roots from growing to cause trouble and defile many.
- Avoid Esau’s Example: Ensure no one is sexually immoral or godless like Esau, who sold birthright for one meal, later rejected when seeking inheritance with tears—no place for repentance found.
- Contrast Old and New Covenants: You have not come to terrifying Sinai—touchable mountain with fire, darkness, gloom, storm, trumpet blast, voice causing beggars to hear no more (even Moses trembled); but to heavenly Zion—joyful assembly, church of firstborn, God as judge, spirits of righteous made perfect, Jesus as new covenant mediator, sprinkled blood speaking better than Abel’s (grace vs. vengeance).
- Warning: Do Not Refuse Him Who Speaks: Refuse not the heavenly speaker; old earthly warnings brought no escape for refusers—how much less for us turning from heaven; His voice shook earth then, now promises final shake of earth and heavens, removing shakable (created things) so unshakable remains.
- Response to Unshakable Kingdom: Receiving unshakable kingdom, be thankful and worship acceptably with reverence and awe—for God is consuming fire.
- Purpose: Overcome race interferences by pursuing peace/holiness, avoiding bitterness/immorality; listen to God’s direct voice through Jesus for grace, as refusal brings severe consequences in this better covenant.
Application
- Pursue peace, holiness, and grace to see the Lord; reject bitterness and godlessness; listen carefully to God’s heavenly voice through Jesus, worship reverently, and hold to the unshakable kingdom amid shakings.
