Sacrificing as a way of loving God
Hebrews 13: 10-25
Audio Summary
Hebrews 13:10-25
Context
- The book of Hebrews addresses Jewish-background believers tempted to revert to old worship amid challenges, emphasizing God’s superior speaking through Jesus (God incarnate) over old mediators like angels, prophets, and animal blood.
- Concludes with practical exhortations on living sacrificially, honoring leaders, and final benediction, reinforcing Jesus’ once-for-all sacrifice.
Concluding Exhortations and Benediction (Hebrews 13:10-25)
- Superiority of Jesus’ Sacrifice: Christians have no right to eat from the old altar (animal sacrifices for priests); old sin offerings burned outside camp—Jesus suffered outside city gate to sanctify people by His blood; go to Him outside camp, bearing His reproach, as no enduring city here but seeking the one to come.
- Continual Sacrifices of Praise: Offer through Jesus continual sacrifice of praise (fruit of lips confessing His name); do not forget good deeds and sharing—such sacrifices please God.
- Submission to Leaders: Obey and submit to leaders who watch over souls and must give account—make their work joyful, not burdensome; pray for the writer and companions with clear consciences, eager to live honorably.
- Warning Against Strange Teachings: Do not be carried away by diverse teachings; hearts strengthened by grace, not ceremonial foods (unprofitable for old adherents); imitate leaders’ faith, considering their godly outcomes.
- Jesus Unchanging: Jesus Christ same yesterday, today, forever—hold to this constancy.
- Remember Leaders and Greetings: Remember imprisoned leaders as if chained with them, and mistreated as if in your body; greet all leaders and saints; those from Italy send greetings.
- Benediction: God of peace, through eternal covenant’s blood, brought back Jesus (great Shepherd); equip with every good for His will, working what pleases Him through Jesus—to whom glory forever.
- Personal Notes: Bear with brief word of exhortation; brother Timothy released—will come with him soon if arrives quickly; grace with all.
- Purpose: Live sacrificially in praise and deeds, submit to leaders, reject strange teachings, hold to unchanging Jesus for an unshakable kingdom.
Application
- Bear Jesus’ reproach outside worldly “camp,” offer praise/good deeds as sacrifices, submit/pray for leaders, guard against false teachings, remember suffering believers, and rely on God’s equipping through Jesus’ blood.
