Obsolete Rules about Worship
Hebrews 9: 1-10
Audio Summary
Hebrews 9:1-10
Context
- Building on the old covenant’s obsolescence (obsolete, outdated, soon disappearing), chapter 9 compares the old earthly tabernacle and worship regulations to the new order, questioning why believers revert to outdated ancestral worship or mixing practices like animal sacrifices.
- Analogies illustrate: Why return to old computers (e.g., MS-DOS), torn clothes, outdated vehicles, or obsolete models when new, superior ones exist?
Worship in the Old and New Sanctuary (Hebrews 9:1-10)
- Old Covenant Regulations and Sanctuary: First covenant had worship rules and earthly sanctuary—a tent with Holy Place (lampstand for light/understanding, table with bread of Presence for life) and Most Holy Place (behind curtain: golden altar of incense, ark containing manna jar, Aaron’s budding staff, stone tablets; mercy seat overshadowed by cherubim).
- Priestly Duties in Old Sanctuary: Priests entered Holy Place regularly for duties; high priest entered Most Holy Place once yearly, never without animal blood, offered first for own sins then people’s unintentional sins.
- Symbolic Limitations: Holy Spirit indicates way into Most Holy Place not yet disclosed while first tabernacle standing—symbolic for present time; gifts/sacrifices couldn’t clear worshiper’s conscience, only dealt with external matters (food, drink, ceremonial washings)—temporary regulations until new order.
- Why Old Insufficient: Most Holy Place closed to direct access—worshipers couldn’t enter God’s presence for mercy, provisions (manna), or power (staff); needed mediator/priest to intercede.
- New Order Through Jesus: At Jesus’ death, curtain torn in two, granting direct access to God; no need for intermediaries or animal blood—confess sins directly, healed by destruction of His body.
- Purpose: Old external, temporary; new internal, permanent—don’t revert to obsolete worship; embrace direct access through Christ.
Application
- Reject outdated ancestral practices like animal sacrifices; trust Jesus’ blood for complete cleansing and direct entry to God’s presence, mercy, provisions, and power.
