Jesus is superior to Moses, the moderator
Hebrews 3: 1-11
Audio Summary
Hebrews 3:1-11
Context
- Building on Jesus’ superiority to angels and His work in defeating death and fear, chapter 3 calls believers to fix thoughts on Jesus while warning against unbelief, using Israel’s wilderness rebellion as a cautionary example.
- God speaks through His Son to plant seeds of faith; hard hearts (like rocky soil in the parable of the sower) reject the Word, leading to rebellion and loss of rest.
- Emphasizes Jesus’ faithfulness as Son over God’s house, contrasting with Moses’ role as faithful servant.
Fix Thoughts on Jesus and Guard Against Unbelief (Hebrews 3:1-11)
- Believers’ Identity and Call (v. 1): Holy brothers and sisters sharing in the heavenly calling—set apart, different from the world, seated with Christ.
- Fix Thoughts on Jesus (vv. 1-2): Acknowledge Him as apostle (sent one) and high priest; faithful to God who appointed Him.
- Jesus Superior to Moses (vv. 3-6):
- Jesus worthy of greater honor than Moses, as builder of the house has greater honor than the house itself (God builds everything).
- Moses: Faithful servant in God’s house, testifying to future truths.
- Jesus: Faithful Son over God’s house.
- We are God’s house if we hold firmly to confidence and hope.
- Second Warning: Against Unbelief (vv. 7-11, quoting Psalm 95):
- “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
- Israel’s example: Tested God in the wilderness despite seeing His works for 40 years; hearts always went astray, did not know His ways.
- God’s response: Anger, oath that they would never enter His rest.
- Unbelief Defined: Not doubt (which seeks evidence and believes when found, e.g., Thomas), but refusal to believe truth despite clear evidence; leads to rebellion and divine anger.
- Rest Explained: God’s provision of freedom from self-effort, trouble, sickness, and need through His Word; unbelief forfeits this rest.
- Purpose: Fix thoughts on Jesus (apostle, high priest, Son) to avoid hardening hearts like Israel; hold confidence to remain God’s house and enter His rest.
Application
- Fix thoughts fully on Jesus’ superiority and faithfulness; reject unbelief by softening hearts to God’s voice today, holding firmly to hope, and entering His rest rather than rebelling like the wilderness generation.
