Signs of backsliding children
Galatians 4:12-20.
Audio Summary
Galatians 4:11-20
Context
- The process of backsliding in children begins with immaturity, making it easy for them to be bewitched or controlled in their minds, preventing access to inheritance like hospitals, food, or homes despite owning them.
- God delayed full inheritance to the children of Israel due to their immaturity, providing it little by little to avoid destruction by wild animals.
- Paul describes how the Galatians initially received him warmly despite his illness, but now have turned away under false teachers’ influence.
- False teachers separate believers from true mentors like Paul to gain exclusive attention, leading to backsliding.
The Process of Backsliding (Galatians 4:11-20)
- Initial Reception: The Galatians welcomed Paul as if he were an angel or Christ Jesus Himself, despite his illness being a trial; they would have torn out their eyes for him if possible.
- Change in Attitude: Paul asks if he has now become their enemy for telling the truth, noting how their initial zeal has turned against him.
- False Teachers’ Motives: False teachers zealously seek the Galatians not commendably, but to alienate them from Paul so they pay attention only to the teachers.
- Eager for Good: It is fine if someone eagerly does good things, but it should be consistent, not just in Paul’s presence.
- Paul’s Labor Pains: Paul feels like going through labor pains again for the Galatians until Christ is fully developed in them, wishing to change his tone if present but unsure how to help from afar.
Application
- Hold on to the true gospel and remember initial conversion experiences to resist being lured away from God’s presence.
