Paul was given a hand of fellowship by other apostles
Galatians 2: 1-10
Audio Summary
Galatians 2:1-10
Context
- When reading Paul’s statements, consider what accusations were made against him, such as claims that he is not a true apostle because he has not seen Jesus and was not part of the twelve.
- Paul provides this information to answer questions raised and to counter discrediting of him and his gospel by agitators.
- Agitators take advantage of strongholds to lead people astray, including introducing a false gospel and discrediting shepherds or pastors by speaking ill of them and painting a bad picture.
- Paul gives a testimony to address the discrediting, detailing his calling and interactions to prove his authority and the truth of his gospel.
Paul’s Visit to Jerusalem (Galatians 2:1-10)
- Journey to Jerusalem: After 14 years, went up to Jerusalem with Barnabas and Titus due to a revelation, submitting the gospel preached to Gentiles privately to leaders, fearing work might be in vain.
- Titus Not Circumcised: Titus, a Greek, was not compelled to be circumcised despite being with them.
- False Believers: False believers infiltrated to spy on freedom in Christ Jesus and enslave under law; did not yield to them for a moment to preserve gospel truth for the Galatians.
- No Additions from Leaders: Those reputed to be leaders added nothing to the message; it did not matter what they were, as God does not show favoritism.
- Recognition of Ministry: Leaders saw God at work in Paul’s ministry to Gentiles as in Peter’s to Jews; recognized grace given to Paul.
- Right Hand of Fellowship: James, Peter, and John gave Paul and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, agreeing Paul go to Gentiles and they to circumcised.
- Remember the Poor: Only asked to continue remembering the poor, which Paul was eager to do.
- Confirmation by Apostles: Apostles in Jerusalem confirmed Paul’s gospel is right, accepted and embraced him, giving blessing to continue preaching to Gentiles.
Application
- Where agitators discredited Paul, the apostles in Jerusalem accredited him and his message.
- Recognize that God has accepted all people, countering spirits of racism or discrimination that reject this truth.
