Introduction
In this session, we focus on understanding the dynamics of the public confession of sin regarding intermarriage by the exiles (Ezra 10:1-12). The repentance involved divorcing foreign women and separating from their children was the most difficult thing to do, yet they went ahead and did it. Today, we must be careful not to imitate such actions physically. Ezra’s purpose in returning was to support rebuilding the community of faith, which included personal altars, marriage altars, and parenting altars. God had forbidden intermarriage with other nations because foreign wives could lead men into idol worship. He was also protecting the lineage of Judah to preserve the birth of Christ by preventing the mixing of tribal lines.
