The Furnace of Judgment and the Search for an Intercessor
Introduction
Ezekiel 22 depicts God’s judgment of Jerusalem for its numerous sins, including bloodguilt, injustice, and corrupt leaders, and explains why divine judgment is inevitable. In this session, 22:17–31, we focus on understanding the impurities of Israel and the failure of all social classes. God compares the people of Israel to dross (waste metal left over from silver smelting) and gathers them in Jerusalem to feel the heat of His wrath. God seeks someone to stand in the gap to save the city, but finds no one.
Objectives
By the end of this session, the learner will have:
- Analyzed the metaphor of the smelting furnace and the dross concerning the Israelites’ sins,
- Examined the failure of prophets, priests, princes, and the people to meet God’s standards,
- Recognized the critical need for righteous intercession and faithfulness.
Outline
- Metaphor of the smelting furnace
- All have sinned to fall short of God’s glory
- Need for righteous intercession
Group Study Time
Ezekiel 22: 17-31
Connecting
- Gather with two or more people for a community discovery bible study session.

- Explore the passage by reading it at least twice, using different Bible versions if available, then retell the story together as a group.
- Reflect and share the challenges and blessings you experienced from the previous study.
Comprehending
- Read Ezekiel 22:17-22. What is a metaphor? How did God compare Israel to this metaphor? How would He address their sins? What does the metaphor of gathering silver and dross in a furnace teach us about God’s judgment?
- Read Ezekiel 22: 23-29. What images did God compare his sinful children to in these verses? What punishment did He promise them? How did the prophets, priests, and princes each fail their spiritual duties (verses 25–28)?
- Read Ezekiel 22:30. What does verse 30 mean when God says He looked for someone to “stand in the gap,” and why is this a warning and a call for us today?
