Audio Summary
1 Corinthians 11:17-34
Context
- Paul addresses divisions in the Corinthian church during the Lord’s Supper, contrasting it with demonic tables, emphasizing unity and proper observance.
- The passage instructs on public worship to glorify God, benefit others, promote growth, and defeat spiritual enemies through self-examination and remembrance.
The Lord’s Supper (1 Corinthians 11:17-34)
- Divisions in Assembly: Gatherings become harmful due to factions; the rich humiliate the poor by eating separately, turning the Supper into personal meals.
- Tradition of the Supper: Received from the Lord—bread as Christ’s body, wine as His blood—observe in remembrance, proclaiming His death until He returns.
- Self-Examination: Examine yourself before partaking to avoid unworthy manner, which sins against Christ’s body and blood, bringing judgment (weakness, sickness, death).
- Discipline and Judgment: God’s judgment disciplines to avoid condemnation with the world; wait for each other, eat at home if hungry, to prevent judgment.
- Two Tables: Contrast the Lord’s table (unity, remembrance) with demonic tables (idolatry); proper observance honors Christ’s sacrifice and fosters community.
- Purpose: Observe the Supper with unity and reverence to glorify God, edify the church, and avoid judgment while proclaiming Christ’s death.
Application
- Examine yourself before the Supper, promote unity by waiting for others, observe reverently to honor Christ, and eat at home if hungry to avoid divisions and judgment.
