Spiritual dimension of life
1 Corinthians 12: 1-11
Audio Summary
1 Corinthians 12:1-11
Context
- Paul addresses order in church gatherings, distinguishing between unordered gatherings and ordered assemblies where parts connect properly, like turning data into knowledge.
- Previous disorders include issues with authority and Holy Communion; now focusing on the proper use of spiritual gifts in a church rich in gifts but divided and lacking morals.
- Gifts only benefit the body when united, modeled after the Trinity’s unity in distributing and working through gifts.
Unity in Spiritual Gifts (1 Corinthians 12:1-11)
- Do Not Be Ignorant: Do not be uninformed about spiritual gifts, an area of much ignorance in the church; formerly led astray by mute idols as pagans, now guided by the Holy Spirit.
- Recognition of the Spirit: No one speaking by God’s Spirit says “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit, highlighting spiritual unity.
- Diversity and Unity in Gifts: Different kinds of gifts but the same Spirit distributes them; different kinds of service but the same Lord; different kinds of working but the same God at work in all.
- Purpose of Gifts: Each manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good, to benefit the whole body; using gifts selfishly causes disorder and disadvantages others.
- List of Gifts: The Spirit gives to some a message of wisdom, to others knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits, speaking in different tongues, and interpretation of tongues—all by the one Spirit as He determines.
- Unity Required: For gifts to function effectively in the church, members must be united like the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, avoiding divisions so the body works together to glorify God.
Application
- Operate in unity with spiritual gifts for the common good, avoid selfish use or ignorance, and model the Trinity’s oneness to maintain order and benefit the church body.
