Paul’s authority comforted and built the hurting church
2 Corinthians 10: 1-18
Audio Summary
2 Corinthians 10:1-15
Context
- Second Corinthians divides into comfort (chs. 1-7), generosity (chs. 8-9), apostolic authority (chs. 10-13); Paul defends against false apostles accusing him of worldly boldness in letters but timidity in person.
- False apostles boast beyond measure, claiming others’ labors; Paul uses divine weapons to demolish strongholds, take thoughts captive to Christ.
- Authority from Lord builds up, not destroys; measure by God’s assignment, not self-comparison.
Paul’s Apostolic Authority (2 Corinthians 10:1-15)
- Appeal in Meekness: Paul appeals by Christ’s meekness/gentleness; accused of lowly presence, bold absence—hopes no boldness needed in person against some thinking his actions worldly.
- Spiritual Warfare: Lives in world but wages war divinely; weapons demolish strongholds, arguments, pretensions against God’s knowledge; take every thought captive to obey Christ.
- Readiness to Punish: Fully obedient, then punish disobedience; obvious facts: belong to Christ as they do.
- Authority to Build: Not boasting excessively about Lord-given authority to build up, not tear down; not ashamed to use it.
- Not Frightening Letters: Letters weighty/strong, presence weak/speeches contemptible; actions in person match letters.
- No Self-Comparison: Won’t compare to self-commenders measuring by themselves—ignorant; boast within God-assigned field, including Corinthians.
- Proper Boasting: Not overreaching or boasting in others’ labors; hope growing faith expands work within boundaries.
- First with Gospel: Reached Corinthians first with gospel; not crediting others’ work.
Application
- Use divine authority/weapons to build up, demolish strongholds, obey Christ; boast within God-assigned limits, avoiding self-comparison or overreach.
