Faith and Hope and Love will last forever
1 Corinthians 13: 1-13
Audio Summary
1 Corinthians 13:1-13
Context
- Order in public worship requires unity, previously addressed in divisions over authority, Holy Communion, and spiritual gifts; now emphasizing love as the binding force for lasting unity in the assembly.
- Gifts elevate the church temporarily, but love sustains it long-term, preventing competition and division seen in the Corinthian church.
- Love is defined as deriving joy from others’ joy, prioritizing others over self, leading to blessings where unity exists.
The Most Excellent Way: Love (1 Corinthians 13:1-13)
- Superiority of Love Over Gifts: Speaking in tongues of men and angels without love is like a resounding gong or clanging cymbal—mere noise without life.
- Love Essential for Gifts: Having prophecy, understanding mysteries and knowledge, or faith to move mountains without love amounts to nothing; gifts only work in the context of love.
- Love Above Sacrifices: Giving all possessions to the poor or enduring hardship without love gains nothing; love is the container and context for gifts to function in the body.
- Characteristics of Love: Love is patient, kind, does not envy, boast, or be proud; it does not dishonor others, is not self-seeking, not easily angered, keeps no record of wrongs; does not delight in evil but rejoices in truth; always protects, trusts, hopes, perseveres, and never fails.
- Temporary Nature of Gifts: Prophecies will cease, tongues will be stilled, knowledge will pass away as they are partial; when completeness comes, the partial disappears, like putting away childish ways for maturity.
- Current vs. Future Knowledge: Now seeing dimly as in a reflection, but then face to face; knowing in part now, but then fully known.
- Enduring Qualities: Faith, hope, and love remain, but the greatest is love, as it maintains completeness and enables gifts to work without competition.
Application
- Prioritize love to bind and sustain unity, allowing gifts to function effectively; rejoice in others, submit, serve, be patient, and avoid self-seeking to glorify God in assembly.
