Avoiding sexual sin
1 Corinthians 6: 12-20
- Session: 12
- Week: 2
- Day: 5
Introduction
In this session, 1 Corinthians chapter 6: 12-20, we will focus on how some former enemies of sexual immorality followed the new converts of the church of God in Corinth, and how to deal with them. We will specifically look at how to deal with conflicts within an individual believer who becomes the temple of God with his spirit within him, and conflict. A fellowship member needs wisdom in dealing with culture. You can seek to know what part of culture is negative, positive or grey. For the grey culture, you can ask yourself three questions:
- For the permissible elements, are they beneficial for me and others?
- Can the permissible make me a slave?
- Do the permissible glory the owner of the temple?
How can a member of the new community avoid sexual sin? Unchallenged conflict within the body of a believer or inside the body of a believer will affect inheriting the kingdom of God, which is the rule of God here on earth.
Objectives
By the end of this session, the learner will have:
- Understood the dynamics of dealing with conflicts both within the body of Christ and conflicts within your body (which is the temple of the Holy Spirit)
- Understood the Impact of unchallenged sexual sin within our bodies.
- Developed a higher motivation to engage in lawsuit conflict within the church of God in the World. (Compare how Abraham engaged in a conflict with his nephew Lot, Genesis 14)
- Appreciated that our moral judgement affects our inheritance into the Kingdom of God.
- Realised that if we fail to judge ourselves, we will be judged by the World. 1 Cor 11:31, But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged.

Audio Summary
1 Corinthians 6:12-20
Context
- Paul addresses the Corinthian church’s struggle with sexual immorality, a former enemy infiltrating the community due to their rejection of leaders’ graces, leading to internal conflicts.
- The passage provides guidance on handling cultural influences, particularly sexual sin, to honor God with the body.
Honoring God with the Body (1 Corinthians 6:12-20)
- Internal Conflicts: Without leadership, the Corinthians struggle with cultural conflicts within themselves, particularly sexual immorality, unable to discern how to engage with cultural practices.
- Evaluating Culture: Cultural elements are positive (e.g., language, food), negative (e.g., sinful practices), or grey; believers must assess grey areas by asking: Is it beneficial? Does it enslave? Does it glorify God?
- Body’s Purpose: The body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord; it belongs to Christ, will be raised like His, and is a member of His body, prohibiting union with prostitutes.
- Temple of the Spirit: The body is the Holy Spirit’s temple, bought at a high price (Christ’s death); believers must honor God by keeping it pure and fleeing sexual sin.
- Uniqueness of Sexual Sin: Unlike other sins, sexual immorality directly harms the body, uniting it with another (e.g., prostitute) instead of Christ, violating its sacred purpose.
- Leadership’s Role: Lack of godly leadership leaves the church vulnerable to cultural sins; trusted leaders guide believers to make godly choices in cultural conflicts.
- Purpose: By honoring the body as God’s temple, fleeing sexual sin, and following godly leadership, believers glorify God and overcome cultural influences that threaten their faith.
Application
- Evaluate cultural practices with biblical wisdom, flee sexual sin, honor your body as God’s temple, and rely on godly leaders to navigate conflicts and glorify God.
