Advice on using the gift of prophecy and tongues in public worship
1 Corinthians 14: 12-25
Audio Summary
1 Corinthians 14:12-25
Context
- Focus on order in public worship through proper use of communication gifts: tongues (speaking to God, edifying self, mysterious) and prophecy (speaking to people, strengthening, comforting, encouraging the church).
- Distinguish between private worship (alone with God, like Jesus’ secluded prayers) and public worship (assembly of believers, including small groups or families, where order prevents disregard and ensures mutual understanding).
- Public worship may include moments for private communication, but overall emphasizes intelligible words to build the church and accommodate inquirers/unbelievers.
Advice for Public Worship: Balancing Spirit and Understanding (1 Corinthians 14:12-25)
- Excel in Edifying Gifts: Eagerly pursue spiritual gifts that build up the church; if speaking in tongues publicly, pray for interpretation to make it fruitful.
- Balance Spirit and Mind: Praying or singing in tongues engages the spirit but leaves the mind unfruitful; balance by also praying and singing with understanding to edify others.
- Consider Others in Praise: Praising God in the spirit (tongues) prevents outsiders or inquirers from saying “Amen” since they don’t understand; like speaking a foreign language (e.g., Swahili to non-speakers), it hinders agreement in multicultural or metropolitan settings.
- Prefer Intelligible Words: Paul speaks in tongues more than anyone but prefers five understandable words to instruct others over 10,000 in tongues; stop childish thinking, be mature in understanding evil.
- Tongues as a Sign: Tongues are a sign for unbelievers (fulfilling prophecy of speaking through foreigners who won’t listen), but if all speak in tongues, inquirers/unbelievers will think the church is mad.
- Prophecy’s Impact on Outsiders: If all prophesy, unbelievers/inquirers are convicted of sin, judged, and secrets exposed, leading them to worship God and declare His presence among the church.
- Role of Inquirers: Church includes seekers and imperfect people (none fully complete); attract them like Jesus did, using prophecy to convict and tongues only if interpreted, allowing the Holy Spirit to provide interpretation.
Application
- In public worship, prioritize prophecy for edification and conviction of inquirers; use tongues privately or with interpretation publicly, balancing spirit and understanding to maintain order and reveal God’s presence.
