A Call to Generous Giving
2 Corinthians 8:1-15
Audio Summary
2 Corinthians 8:1-15
Context
- After comfort/reconciliation (chs. 1-7), Paul addresses generosity (chs. 8-9); backsliding halted giving to Jerusalem church, now resume with Macedonian example.
- Macedonians, poor yet joyful givers, begged to share despite trials; gave selves to Lord, then others.
- Models: Macedonians’ beyond-ability giving, Jesus’ richness to poverty for our richness, wilderness manna equality.
Grace of Giving (2 Corinthians 8:1-15)
- Macedonian Generosity: God’s grace to Macedonian churches: severe trials, extreme poverty overflowed in rich generosity, giving beyond ability.
- Begging to Give: Begged to share in serving Jerusalem saints; gave selves first to Lord, then to us by God’s will.
- Urge to Excel: Urge Titus to complete grace of giving in you; excel in faith, speech, knowledge, earnestness, love—also giving.
- Test of Love: Not command, but test love’s sincerity by others’ earnestness; know Christ’s grace: rich yet poor for your richness.
- Finish Started Work: Willing last year, now finish; give according to means—if willing, acceptable per what one has.
- Seek Equality: Your plenty supplies their need now; later theirs yours—for equality, as in manna: much had no extra, little no lack.
Application
- Resume stalled giving willingly per means, modeling Christ’s sacrifice and manna equality; give beyond ability in joy, supplying needs for mutual provision.
